Placing a bag of salt in the cupboard helps prevent and combat the smell of damp, which is very common in closed environments. Proper ventilation helps, but coarse salt can help keep clothes from smelling bad.
If you want to perfume the inside of the closet as well as eliminating humidity, pour a few drops of an essential oil of your choice onto the salt.
Salt also prevents insects from nesting in our closets and, if poured into shoes, also helps eliminate bad odors.
